Mastering the "Attack-Then-Push" and "Push-Then-Attack" Strategies: Street Defense Insights
Mastering the "Attack-Then-Push" and "Push-Then-Attack" Strategies: Street Defense Insights
In street altercations, certain patterns of attack are universal, and understanding them can be the difference between safety and danger. One such sequence, often mislabeled as the "push-then-strike" strategy, actually involves "attack-then-push" or "push-then-attack" dynamics, often broken into individual strings and connected into a chaotic whole. These actions can include flurries of punches, clinches, tackles, takedown attempts, weapons attacks, multiple opponent strategies, and even chokes. At THE ATACX GYM, I, Mwalimu Mtaalam Ras Fletcher, teach practitioners to recognize, counter, and neutralize these combinations with the strategic depth of TIER 1 STRATEGIES and the 7 components thereof.
The "attack-then-push" sequence typically begins with a flurry of punches, a clinch, or a takedown attempt. The push that follows serves to destabilize, create space, or prepare for another attack. For example, an aggressor might rush forward with wild punches, then shove you into a wall to continue striking or attempt a tackle. Conversely, the "push-then-attack" sequence begins with an aggressive shove designed to unbalance and intimidate, followed immediately by a flurry of punches, a clinch, or even a weapon attack.
Consider two examples of these combinations:
- Push-Then-Attack Combination: An aggressor pushes you with both hands to the chest, creating space, and immediately follows up with a low tackle to take you to the ground.
- Attack-Then-Push Combination: A series of wild punches forces you to retreat, after which the attacker shoves you off balance into a chokehold or against a barrier to deliver further strikes.
At THE ATACX GYM, we break these scenarios into individual components—addressing the push, the attack, and the transitions between them—and teach practitioners how to counter them effectively. For example, against a properly skilled push, we train in redirection techniques that exploit the opponent’s momentum. We also emphasize wristlock counters for grabs or pushes, and develop the ability to neutralize flurries, clinches, tackles, and headlocks through superior timing and skilled counteroffensives.
Our training doesn't stop there. Using TIER 1 STRATEGIES, we teach practitioners how to apply flurries, clinches, tackles, and chokes in a skilled and deliberate manner, turning the tables on aggressors. Every attack becomes an opportunity for counteraction, ensuring that you’re not only reacting but actively controlling the fight.
This comprehensive system reflects the disciplined essence of Njia Uhuru Kipura. It prepares you to defend against not only the chaotic flurries of single attackers but also the layered strategies of multiple assailants or weapons-based attacks. Every movement, from the push to the punch, is an opening for skilled counters rooted in precision, rhythm, and adaptability.
You don’t have to guess or hope for the best in a confrontation. Train with us to master the tools, strategies, and mindset that ensure your success.
