For those of you don't know what Kipura is? Let me explain: Dr. K. K. Bunseki Fu-Kiau, a distinguished Congolese scholar, emphasized the term "Kipura" or "Kipula" as the original self-defense and holistic human development system that later devolved into what is now known as Capoeira. In his teachings, Dr. Fu-Kiau elucidated that Kipura involved agile and dexterous movements inspired by various animals and elements found in nature, including the fierce fighting techniques of roosters.
However, in the cities controlled by White Brazilians, Kipura warrior practices were forced to devolve into what eventually became known as "Capoeira." Despite this devolution, Capoeira retained its inherent danger and efficacy, showcasing remarkable adaptability and resilience in the face of oppression. The deadly art of Kipura persisted, particularly outside of the cities colonized by White Brazilians and Europeans.
Outside of these urban centers, Kipura remained highly potent and victorious, contributing to the ongoing existence of quilombos in Brazil. These quilombos, communities formed by escaped slaves and free people of African descent, served as bastions of resistance and cultural preservation, maintaining the essence of Kipura and its profound connection to African heritage.
Dr. Fu-Kiau's insights shed light on the complex evolution of Kipura into Capoeira and its enduring legacy, highlighting its role in resistance, resilience, and cultural identity within the Afro-Brazilian community.
My family's version of Njia Uhuru Kipura is the world's most complete, advanced and effective form of Kipura.
