Brazil's Historic Afrotourism Initiative: Celebrating Black Heritage

Title: Brazil's Historic Afrotourism Initiative: Celebrating Black Heritage

In a groundbreaking move, Brazil is poised to champion its rich Black heritage on a global scale with the launch of its first-ever nationwide Afrotourism promotion plan. Slated for full implementation in 2024, this ambitious initiative, led by the Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur/Visit Brasil), encompasses a multifaceted approach to showcase the country's Afro-Brazilian history and culture.

The comprehensive Afrotourism promotion plan is set to elevate Brazil to the pinnacle of Afrotourism destinations worldwide. Through web series, commercial agreements, marketing campaigns, and partnerships with various organizations and communities dedicated to Afrotourism, Brazil aims to celebrate its unique historical narrative.

The initiative will spotlight iconic destinations such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and São Paulo, with a particular focus on driving sustainable, community-based tourism projects. These projects are designed not only to attract international visitors but also to empower local communities economically.

Afrotourism in Brazil goes beyond celebrating Black culture; it serves as a catalyst for social change and anti-racism movements. By promoting a shift in mindset and encouraging anti-racist attitudes, Afrotourism contributes to broader societal transformation.

Nilzete Santos, owner of Salvador-based tourism agency Afrotours, emphasized the importance of Afrotourism in combating racism: "The idea of Afrotourism is to promote the transformation of thinking so as to avoid racism, that is, to bring upon situations through which a person will begin to know themselves and therefore promote anti-racism."

Economically, Afrotourism provides substantial support to local communities, offering international visitors the opportunity to invest in sustainable forms of tourism. Mestre Dumdum, coordinator of Casa do Nego Fugido, a cultural association in Bahia, highlighted the positive impact on communities: "The community is satisfied because it provides meals, accommodation… In addition to bringing [the tourists] here, we have the satisfaction of assisting them and seeing the economy growing."

Embratur's president, Marcelo Freixo, envisions these values shaping Brazil's international image: "We want the world to come and visit a democratic Brazil, which values its diversity, promotes inclusion and does not tolerate racism. The Brazil that returned is the Brazil that is proud of its African heritage and wants it to generate jobs, income, and sustainable development."

Tania Neres, Embratur's coordinator of Diversity, Afrotourism, and Indigenous Peoples, highlights Afrotourism as a global movement against racism, shedding light on erased stories and showcasing the power and resilience of Afro-Brazilian culture.

This groundbreaking initiative builds upon previous efforts, including a partnership with travel giant TripAdvisor, which now features a page highlighting Afrotourism attractions in Brazil. Additionally, a web series produced by Embratur showcases the cultural richness awaiting travelers in Brazilian Afrotourism destinations.

As Brazil embarks on this journey to promote Afrotourism, it is set to create a route encompassing various experiences across the nation. From the Black São Paulo Walk to Little Africa in Rio de Janeiro, One Week in Bahia, and The Path of Legends Walk in São Luís, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Afro-Brazilian culture.

The month of November, marked by National Black Consciousness Day on November 20th, is dedicated to black consciousness and anti-racist initiatives, further highlighting Brazil's commitment to celebrating its cultural and ancestral heritage.
