Theft and Larceny: Understanding, Prevention, and Ancient Wisdom
Theft and Larceny: Understanding, Prevention, and Ancient Wisdom
Theft and larceny are not only the most common property crimes globally but also the most persistent crimes in human history. Despite the ubiquity of these issues, many approaches to combating them remain rudimentary. Unlike the often superficial tips given by many "Cardio Capoeira" instructors, Mwalimu Mtaalam/Head Coach Ras Fletcher of ATACX Gym integrates ancient Alkebulan (African) wisdom and modern crime prevention strategies into his Njia Uhuru Kipura system. Kipura, the original Kongo-developed practice of self-defense, spirituality, and human development, has been mischaracterized as the largely fitness-oriented activity called Capoeira. At ATACX Gym, Kipura is restored to its original intent: a holistic practice that includes effective tools for self-defense, crime prevention, and personal empowerment.
In this blog, we will explore theft and larceny, share practical prevention tips, and draw from Alkebulan trickster folklore for deeper insights into staying vigilant and adaptable in the face of cunning criminals.
What Is Theft and Larceny?
To address these crimes, we first need to define them according to U.S. law:
- Theft: The unlawful taking and carrying away of someone else’s personal property with the intent to permanently deprive them of it.
- Larceny: A specific type of theft where property is taken without consent, often secretly, and with no intention of returning it. It typically excludes force or threats, which distinguishes it from robbery.
Practical Theft Prevention Tips
Many police departments, including those at Western Connecticut State University, provide excellent suggestions for preventing theft and larceny. Let’s explore these and build upon them with additional insights.
Personal Belongings
- Don’t leave items unattended: Thieves are opportunistic. Whether you’re in a public space, office, or your car, unattended items invite theft. Always keep valuables out of sight or securely locked.
- Carry essentials: Keep wallets, phones, and bags with you at all times. Even leaving them for “just a minute” can result in a loss.
Lock Doors and Windows
- Secure all entry points: Theft often occurs when doors and windows are unlocked. Always lock up, whether it’s your home, office, or car.
- Report faulty locks: Ensure that locks function correctly. If they’re broken, report or fix them immediately.
Mark Your Valuables
- Operation Identification: Mark valuables with distinct identifiers like initials, driver’s license numbers, or unique designs. Use engraving tools to mark metal, plastic, and wooden items. This makes fencing stolen goods more difficult and increases the likelihood of recovery.
- Keep an inventory: Record all marked items, including serial numbers and descriptions.
Vehicle Theft Prevention
- Always lock your car: Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Use the trunk for storage if necessary.
- Install anti-theft devices: Consider hidden electrical switches, alarms, or steering wheel locks. Remove the coil wire when parking for extended periods.
- Park strategically: Choose well-lit areas and busy spots.
Bicycle Safety
- Engrave your bike: Mark it with unique identifiers and record the serial number.
- Invest in strong locks: Heavy-duty locking mechanisms are crucial for safeguarding bicycles.
Be Aware of Strangers
- Challenge intruders tactfully: If you encounter a stranger in a restricted area, ask, “May I help you?” Often, this prompts them to leave while you gather identifying details.
- Notify authorities: Report suspicious activity to local or university police. Provide accurate descriptions and the direction of escape.
General Safety Tips
- Stay alert in public spaces: Be aware of surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
- Travel in pairs: There’s safety in numbers, particularly at night.
- Secure your cash: Avoid flashing money or carrying large sums. Opt for cards or traveler’s checks.
How to Identify Potential Thieves
Recognizing suspicious behavior can be tricky but is essential for prevention. Look for these signs:
- Suspicious glances: Constantly scanning surroundings or checking pockets and bags.
- Unnatural proximity: Standing too close without a clear reason, especially in crowded areas.
- Distraction tactics: Engaging you in conversation while an accomplice steals.
- Nervous behavior: Fidgeting, excessive movement, or avoiding eye contact.
- Disguises: Use of sunglasses, hoodies, hats, or scarves to obscure appearance.
What to Do If You Suspect a Thief:
- Maintain distance and avoid confrontation.
- Keep your belongings secure.
- Trust your instincts and move away if something feels off.
- Report suspicious activity to security or police discreetly.
Alkebulan Wisdom: Lessons from Trickster Folklore
Alkebulan (Africa) has a rich tradition of trickster gods and animals that teach us lessons about cunning, misdirection, and adaptability—qualities shared by thieves. Two stories highlight strategies that apply to theft prevention:
Ture the Spider
In Zande folklore, Ture meets a man-eating monster with a gong used to trap victims. Ture offers to demonstrate how to climb inside the gong but leaves an arm outside, preventing it from closing. He convinces the monster to demonstrate, then traps and kills it.
Key Lesson: Thieves often use misdirection and manipulation to lure their targets into vulnerability. Be cautious of offers or requests that seem harmless but might compromise your safety. Ture’s story also underscores the importance of locking away your belongings and securing exits. Just as Ture locked the monster into its own gong, locking doors, windows, and valuables can prevent or entrap thieves.
The Hare, Hippopotamus, and Elephant
A lazy hare tricks a hippo and an elephant into a tug-of-war by tying them to opposite ends of a rope. Believing they’re pulling against the hare, they clear a field, allowing the hare to support a wife without doing the work himself.
Key Lesson: Like the hare, thieves exploit others’ strength or actions for personal gain. Avoid deviating from routines or engaging in unfamiliar situations that could expose you to risks. Furthermore, the hare’s success depended on not engaging in any behaviors that would raise suspicion, such as unnatural proximity, nervousness, or recognizable disguises—all key tactics thieves also avoid.
Remarkably, the lessons in both these stories align with the practical advice shared earlier. Neither Ture nor the hare could afford to exhibit suspicious behavior or disguises that could be identified, nor could they act nervously or unnaturally close to their targets without arousing suspicion. Their success highlights the universal importance of vigilance, adaptability, and preparation in preventing theft.
These examples demonstrate how we can use Udanganyifu, often miscalled "malicia" in Brazil, to our advantage. The Portuguese language—like English—lacks the nuanced, multilevel, and multilayered meanings inherent in much older languages, such as those from Alkebulan. Just as Spanish, Portuguese, and French allow for expressions that English cannot fully capture, Alkebulan languages offer depths of understanding that enrich our strategies for vigilance and adaptability. The stories of Ture and the Hare illustrate how cleverness, coupled with disciplined observation, mirrors the practice of Udanganyifu to outsmart potential threats.
